A Simple "Yes": How a Shaded Porch Became a Ripple of Kindness

Submitted story — 07/24/2026, By Abigail Mwaungulu

A small, unplanned act — offering shade on a hot day — sparked connection, gratitude, and a powerful reminder of the impact of everyday kindness.

When the doorbell rang that day, I looked at my camera and saw a woman I had never met before. She asked if she could sit on my porch during her lunch break because it was so hot outside. I didn't really have to think about it. I just said yes.

I think we live in a world where we're so used to being cautious or assuming the worst about people, but my first thought was simply that she looked like someone who needed a place to rest for a few minutes. If I had a shaded porch and she needed it, why wouldn't I share it?

We talked a little through the camera after I told her she was welcome to stay. She thanked me several times and was incredibly kind. The conversation was short, but there was something about her gratitude that stayed with me long after she walked away.

I couldn't stop thinking about her over the next day. She had asked for so little, just a place to sit during her lunch break, but it made me wonder what else she might be carrying that I couldn't see. I kept thinking about how many people quietly go through difficult seasons without anyone noticing.

The next day, I went to Target and put together a small care basket with the help of two strangers through TikTok. It wasn't anything extravagant. I just wanted her to know that someone saw her, cared about her, and believed she mattered. I filled it with a few thoughtful things and headed to the Wendy's where she worked, hoping I'd be able to find her.

Thankfully, I did. When I walked in and saw her, I introduced myself, surprised her with the care basket, and that's when I finally learned her name was Dara. She was completely caught off guard. She was so thankful, so emotional, and kept asking why I would do something so kind for someone I didn't even know.

That's also when I told her about the video.

She had no idea that a simple moment of asking to sit on someone's porch had touched so many people. We talked for a while, laughed together, and I got to know her a little better. She has such a caring heart and such a positive spirit despite everything she's been facing.

What has surprised me most through all of this isn't that the video went viral. It's how deeply people are craving kindness. Millions of people have watched a woman ask to sit on a stranger's porch and another stranger simply say yes. There was no grand gesture in that first moment. It was simply two people choosing kindness.

I think that's what people connected with. We all have opportunities every day to choose love before judgment, compassion before assumption, and generosity before inconvenience. This experience has reminded me that even the smallest act of kindness can create a ripple effect far beyond what we ever expect.

Meeting Dara has been one of those moments I'll never forget. I'm incredibly grateful our paths crossed, and I hope this story encourages people to look for opportunities to care for the people around them because you never know how much a simple "yes" can mean to someone.

A Statement from The Ripples of Kindness Project

Every act of kindness begins with a choice.

When Abigail opened her heart to a stranger who simply needed a place to rest, she couldn't have known that her simple "yes" would inspire millions. What began as a brief encounter between two strangers became a powerful reminder that compassion still exists, and that even the smallest acts of kindness can leave lasting impressions.

At The Ripples of Kindness Project, we believe this story perfectly illustrates our mission. Kindness doesn't always require grand gestures. Sometimes it's offering a seat, sharing a smile, listening without judgment, or taking a moment to truly see another person. Those seemingly ordinary moments often become the extraordinary ones.

We are honored that Abigail has allowed us to share her story. Her willingness to extend grace to Dara, and then to continue that kindness with a thoughtful care basket, demonstrates how one act of compassion naturally leads to another. That's how ripples are created—one intentional choice at a time.

We hope this story reminds you that every day presents an opportunity to make a difference in someone's life. You may never know what someone is carrying, but you can always choose kindness. And when you do, your kindness has the power to travel farther than you could ever imagine.

Thank you, Abigail, for reminding us that changing the world doesn't always start with something big. Sometimes, it starts with simply saying, "Yes."

Kindness creates ripples. Let's keep them going.
